If you knit or crochet and you think maybe Bush is missing some of the more important issues on this planet there's a campaign for you too!
Caps to the Capitol is being run by Save the Children. The project is aiming to tell the president that 4 million newborns die each year, and half within the first 24 hours. They're working on simple health measures that could save up to 70% of this infants including antibiotics and keeping them warm (hence the hats). So what you can do is (this bit is straight from their info package):
1. Make a cap.
Follow one of our patterns (pages 5-6) (Their patterns are designed to fit newborns)
Fill in the tag (page 8) and attach it to your cap.
2.Write the President.
Fill in the note to President Bush (page 7) so he knows you care about newborns around the world. If you like,
include your name and address. This information is necessary only to show our leaders that the cap was made
by a volunteer knitter or crocheter.
Put your cap and note in an envelope and mail it by January 2, 2007 to:
Knitters and Crocheters for Newborns: Caps to the Capital
Save the Children
P.O. Box 950
Westport, CT 06881
3. Unite for Newborns.
It would also be very helpful if you could join with us and with other knitters and crocheters from around the
country on October 10 to call the White House. Your cap can help us save a life. Your voice can help us save
millions. Send in the “Stay in the Loop” form on page 8 and we’ll update you when the time comes.
Tell others to visit savethechildren.org or warmupamerica.org. Post the flyer (page 9) at your favorite yarn shop
or community bulletin board.
Here is the PDF with the pages mentioned above.
Save the Chidlren says they'll take the caps to the whitehouse first and then make sure the caps get to actual newborns.
Spread the word, post the flyers at yarn shops, and make a hat!
